According to a report from Naukri JobSpeak, hiring and recruitment activity in India has risen by up to 5 percent in July amid the gradual easing of lockdown revocation and resumption of critical industries.

The analysis takes a deep dive into sectors such as staffing and recruitment (37%), media and entertainment (36%), and construction/engineering (27%), which led to the spike in the hiring activity.

Industries/Sectors:

BFSI (16%), Automotive (14%), Telecom (13%), and IT–Hardware (9%) continue to improve in hiring. However, IT Software positions remained flat (0%) for the second consecutive month. Education/Teaching, Hospitality, and Retail sectors saw declines of 22%, 5% and 2%, respectively, over this same span.

Hiring in industries such as hotel/aviation/travel (-80%), Retail (-71%), Real Estate (-60%), and oil & gas/power (-58%) continued to struggle in July when compared to this time last year. Important sectors such as BPO/ITeS (-42%), FMCG (-39%), Pharma/Biotech (-38%), IT-Hardware (-30%), and Medical/Healthcare (-20%) were least impacted in recruitment year-over-year.

Geographies:

From the location perspective, India has seen sequential growth in hiring across the tier-1 and metro cities of Mumbai (8%) and Chennai (4%). Tier-2 cities – including Jaipur, Vadodara, and Chandigarh – also experienced growth. “It is interesting to witness emerging cities leading the way in the recovery of job market versus the tier-1 cities, where the hiring activity has declined by more than 50%,” stated Pawan Goyal, chief business officer at Naukri.com.

Roles and Experiences:

Hiring activity for roles in productions/maintenance (6%), pharma/media (5%), marketing/advertisement (4%), and sales/business development (4%) witnessed slight bumps, as well. However, recruitment in the hospitality and education sectors was most impacted.

When examining mid- to senior-level management executives with 8-16 years of experience, the Indian job market saw a 6% increase in hiring. This indicates a positive development, as according to the Naukri JobSpeak, this growth in recruitment activity was sluggish in July of 2019. Recruitment across the board was highly impacted with entry-level experience bands (0-3 years) witnessed the sharpest decline.

Given the intensity of the pandemic and spike in cases in metro cities and intermittent lockdowns at few places, hiring activity in metro cities was most impacted. In metro cities such as Chennai (-55%), Mumbai (-54%), and Bengaluru (-54%), these spikes were all higher than the national average.
