IoT Interview Questions, Part One: Manufacturing, Automotive, Retail
The Internet of Things (IoT) job market in India in 2023 is expected to experience exponential growth. According to data from a report by DATAQUEST, “The Indian IoT market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 17.1%. It is expected to reach USD 1 Trillion in the next 5–7 years.”
What does this mean for the Indian job market? Here are the top three takeaways:
- The IoT industry is expected to generate several thousand jobs in India in the near future.
- The government and private sector will continue to invest in IoT (and other emerging technologies).
- There will be a strong focus on hiring professionals who can help companies gain a competitive edge in the market.
As a hiring manager, you’ll be tasked with hiring software developers, data scientists, system engineers, security professionals, and many others—all of whom have the skills and experience to both develop and manage IoT-based solutions.
Before we get ahead of ourselves, let’s identify which industries will be most affected by IoT in India. From there, we can determine which interview questions to ask job candidates.
In part one of this series, let’s take a look at three industries: manufacturing, automotive, and retail.
Manufacturing
An IoT job in manufacturing could include roles such as a Manufacturing IoT Solutions Architect, Manufacturing IoT Data Analyst, or Manufacturing IoT Engineer. These roles may involve researching, designing, and implementing IoT solutions to improve production efficiency, monitor product quality, or reduce waste.
What You Should Ask
What experience do you have working with various types of IoT-enabled devices in a manufacturing environment?
How They Should Answer
- The candidate should explain their experience building, maintaining, and troubleshooting various types of IoT-enabled devices in a manufacturing environment.
- This could include experience with sensors, controllers, and other related devices, as well as knowledge of protocols, networks, and analytics used to manage and monitor these devices.
Automotive
In an automotive setting, IoT can help connect vehicles to the internet and each other. It can be used to provide drivers with real-time traffic updates, route suggestions, and other on-board services such as remote vehicle diagnostics, maintenance reminders, and access to entertainment services. It can also be used to provide a secure connection between the car and its environment, allowing for features such as automatic parking, automated toll payments, and even driverless cars.
What You Should Ask
What is a challenge you’ve overcome developing and deploying IoT solutions in a manufacturing setting?
How They Should Answer
- One challenge that an IoT professional would have to overcome in the manufacturing industry is ensuring that the data collected from various connected devices is securely stored and handled.
- This includes ensuring that data is encrypted, that access is limited to only those with the proper credentials, and that the data is not susceptible to cyber-attacks.
- Additionally, the IoT professional would need to ensure that the data is properly analyzed and used to improve the efficiency of the manufacturing process.
Retail
In a retail setting, IoT can take many forms. It can be used to monitor consumer traffic and preferences in the store, track inventory levels and ensure shelves are restocked in time, alert staff to customer needs, monitor customer loyalty points, and even provide customers with tailored offers and discounts.
What You Should Ask
How do you ensure scalability and reliability when deploying IoT solutions in a retail environment?
How They Should Answer
- The candidate could explain how deploying IoT solutions in a retail environment involves using a cloud platform that can scale automatically, such as Amazon Web Services (AWS).
- This platform can provide the necessary infrastructure to support large amounts of data, as well as provide the necessary security measures to ensure data is protected.
- Additionally, making sure the devices used are reliable and have the ability to be monitored remotely can help ensure the system is robust and secure.
