IoT Interview Questions, Part Three: Energy, Logistics, Security

The internet of things (IoT) job market in India in 2023 is expected to experience exponential growth. According to data from a report by DATAQUEST, “The Indian IoT market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 17.1%. It is expected to reach USD 1 Trillion in the next 5–7 years.”

What does this mean for the Indian job market? Here are the top three takeaways:

  1. The IoT industry is expected to generate several thousand jobs in India in the near future.
  2. The government and private sector will continue to invest in IoT (and other emerging technologies).
  3. There will be a strong focus on hiring professionals who can help companies gain a competitive edge in the market.

As a hiring manager, you’ll be tasked with hiring software developers, data scientists, system engineers, security professionals, and many others—all of whom have the skills and experience to both develop and manage IoT-based solutions.

Before we get ahead of ourselves, let’s identify which industries will be most affected by IoT in India. From there, we can determine which interview questions to ask job candidates.

In part three of this series, let’s take a look at three industries: energy, logistics, and security.

Energy

IoT can have a huge impact on the energy industry. IoT can help to improve energy efficiency by enabling devices to be interconnected and communicate with each other. This could allow for more efficient energy usage, as devices can be programmed to respond to changes in the energy market or to fluctuations in energy usage.

What You Should Ask

What is an example of a troubleshooting issue you would solve in the energy industry?

How They Should Answer

An example of a troubleshooting issue that may take place with IoT in the energy industry could be identifying and resolving connectivity issues between connected devices or analyzing data to identify opportunities for energy usage optimization.

Devices that can be used to connect devices using IoT in the energy industry could include sensors, gateways, communication modules, and controllers.

Logistics

IoT solutions allow companies to track shipments in real time, so logistics coordinators can see exactly when shipments reach their destination. This reduces errors, improves customer service and satisfaction, and enhances overall efficiency. IoT solutions also create opportunities to monitor temperatures of temp-sensitive shipments, automate inventory and warehouse management tasks, and collect data used to optimize overall performance.

What You Should Ask

How might IoT be used to implement voice-activated applications in the logistics industry?

How They Should Answer

Voice-activated applications can be used in the logistics industry to provide users with access to data and insights into their operations.

For example, a voice-activated application could be used for tracking shipments, monitoring inventory levels, and analyzing trends in logistics data.

The application could also be used to provide users with automated notifications when certain conditions are met, such as when shipments are delayed or when inventory levels reach a certain threshold.

The voice-activated application could also provide users with real-time updates on their operations, allowing them to make more informed decisions.

Security

IoT-enabled devices support end-to-end security solutions that are more connected, efficient, and secure. These devices can be used to monitor, detect, and prevent security threats (theft, vandalism, and unauthorized access) that might not be detected with traditional security measures. Security officials can use IoT to detect and respond to security breaches, automate access control and surveillance systems, and even detect threats before they occur.

What You Should Ask

What are some ways to test, analyze, or monitor IoT systems for security vulnerabilities?

How They Should Answer

Compromises to an IoT system could stem from:

  1. Unsecured network Connectivity: IoT systems rely on networks to communicate and transfer data, so a lack of secure network connections can lead to data breaches.
  2. Unencrypted data: Data sent over unencrypted networks can be intercepted and used for malicious purposes.
  3. Malware infection: Malware can be used to gain access to an IoT system and extract sensitive data.
  4. Unauthorized access: Unauthorized users can gain access to an IoT system and manipulate data.
  5. Insecure APIs: APIs provide access to an IoT system, so they need to be secured to prevent unauthorized access.
  6. Lack of authentication: Without proper authentication, an IoT system can be vulnerable to attacks.
  7. Poorly configured firewalls: Firewalls should be configured correctly to prevent malicious attacks.
